Trivia[]

  • This relic references the philosopher Epicurus (341-270 B.C.), who is mentioned prominently in the circle of Heresy for his teachings that the soul dies with the body, and that as such there is no survival after death. Therefore, Epicurus preached that people should enjoy their lives as much as possible, living without fear nor pain, only pleasurable experiences. His name became synonymous with the word "heretic" in the Christian world, since his philosophy was in direct opposition to Judeo-Christian teachings of life after death, and living without overindulgence of the flesh.
  • Some of the souls damned to this circle (Farinata degli Uberti, Cavalcante di Cavalcanti) were followers of Epicurus's teachings.
