Fiery Tombs

In Dante's Divine Comedy

Within the sixth circle of Hell, beyond the walls of the infernal City of Dis, Dante and Virgil bear witness to countless fiery tombs. Within these tombs reside the souls of those condemned for the sin of Heresy. Some tombs appear to be open, however, but they are foretold to then close with the coming of the Last Judgment.

Overview

Shortly after entering the City of Dis, Dante comes to its catacombs. Here, the souls of the Heretics remain trapped in these fiery tombs for eternity. Among those trapped in these crypts are Farinata Uberti, King Frederick II, and Cavalcante de Cavalcanti.
